Email security

For most people, the security risks of using the internet and email are minimal. It is very unlikely that your email will be stopped or seen by someone else before it reaches us. However, please think carefully about the extra details that you give us. Our service does not have the facility for you to send attachments such as letters or contracts.

What is personal and special category data?

Personal data is data which can be used to identify you. This may include your name, date of birth, address, telephone number etc.

Special category data is information related to any of the following: racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs, trade union membership, health, sexuality or sex life, offences and/or convictions.

Where will you store my data?

We keep all your details confidential and do not pass them on to anyone else without your permission. The rules of the General Data Protection Regulations mean that we need your agreement to store your personal details.

IMPORTANT: If you apply via this form, you agree to Citizens Advice storing the information you give us on our records system. Your information may also be stored in a paper file held securely and accessed by the Citizens Advice service only.

Can I withhold my consent?

Yes, we will not record your information unless you provide your consent.

We will not share your information with anyone else without your consent, unless required to do so by law.

What is a Data Controller?

A Data Controller is someone who is responsible for your data and who must make sure that your data is processed according to the law. For example they are responsible for making sure that the information held about you is accurate and that it is kept secure.

Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you from volunteering with Citizens Advice Arun & Chichester – much will depend on the role and the background and circumstances of your offence.
To ensure the safety of our clients, the Citizens Advice service requires that all volunteers who have direct access to clients, where any part of the work is primarily targeted at legally defined vulnerable adults or children, have their criminal records checked. However, the Citizens Advice service is committed to the promotion and delivery of equal opportunities to volunteers and so has a policy to ensure ex-offenders are not discriminated against.
All offences, other than sexual crimes against a child or vulnerable adult, will be treated on an individual basis taking into account issues such as the risk to the client, the circumstances of the offence (e.g. what it was, is it relevant to the volunteer role, how long ago it was) and the reputation of the office. Anyone with a conviction for a sexual offence against a child or vulnerable adult, whenever it was committed, is not considered suitable to volunteer within the service and will not be taken on by a Citizens Advice.
If possible, please give the names and email address or postal address of two people who have known you for over two years, other than your family, who can tell us about you. One referee should be someone who knows you in a professional capacity eg employer, teacher, community leader. The second referee should be someone who knows you well. Both referees should be able to comment on your suitability for the role. References will only be taken up for successful volunteers following interview.
