Get Winter Ready

Every winter, cold weather places strain on those who are already vulnerable. We know cold homes can be dangerous - the NHS and public health services face additional pressures during the winter months, and health issues can quickly escalate.

Get Winter Ready is our campaign designed to help people prepare for the colder months before winter sets in. Cold weather can be particularly tough for those with respiratory conditions, low incomes, or who are otherwise vulnerable, and we want to ensure the right information and support is accessible in good time. By acting early, households can avoid unnecessary health risks, reduce energy costs, and feel confident going into the winter.

Through this campaign, we are encouraging everyone to take simple, practical steps to get winter ready. We’ve created a clear checklist with advice on preparing your home and looking after your health, and we’re working with local partners to display posters, distribute printed materials, and share information widely online. We’re also equipping frontline staff with resources and winter packs so they can support the community directly.

We know that many people wait until the cold weather arrives before seeking help, but by then it can already be too late. Our goal is to make sure individuals and families feel empowered to prepare early, and know how to get in touch with our energy advice service if they need extra support.

The Get Winter Ready campaign is about prevention, empowerment, and community. It’s about making sure people have the tools, knowledge, and support they need before winter places them at risk.

Pension Credit and The Winter Fuel Payment

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual, one-off payment to help pensioners pay for heating during the winter, which, depending on your age and who you live with, can provide up to £300 towards your energy bills. The new changes mean that you now need to be receiving Pension Credit – a means-tested benefit – to be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment.

However, Pension Credit is an extremely under-claimed benefit with one third of people entitled to Pension Credit currently not claiming it. As such, there were thousands of people this year in our area who should be receiving the Winter Fuel Payment who were at risk of missing out.

In light of this, we launched a campaign encouraging all those who are eligible to claim Pension Credit, so as to not miss out on this vital source of support. We know there are many vulnerable pensioners within our community who rely on the Winter Fuel Payment to be able to properly heat their homes during the cold winter months, and we did not want anyone to miss out on this vital support because they aren’t aware of the changes.

The deadline to apply for Pension Credit to receive the Winter Fuel Payment this year was 21st December 2024. However, if you are concerned about being able to pay your energy bills this winter, our energy team can offer free advice and support on other issues such as getting fuel vouchers, energy grants or changing tariffs.
